Still Kicking
To the seven people who visit this website, I heartily apologize. :) I haven’t forgotten about you, but life has a funny way of dragging me around, and sometimes the things I like to do suffer. So, let me reintroduce myself. I’m still me. I’m still here. And with any luck, and a bit of focus, I’ll still write some things here that are of interest to someone.
How about some updates? Here goes….
SOUNDTRACK is about to be cast into the final phase of production. This faze is critical, as it will be the one where all the various media technologies I’ve been dabbling in come into alignment and become this art project I’ve been seeing in my head for over two years. I’m wrapping up a couple of mix projects at present, one for Brad Sucks, the other for The Peptides, both of which are sounding very very good. I’ll be featuring some writing about both soon, most likely after they are done. Once both are completed, I will take a break from extra-laboratorial work to focus on getting at least one musical project completed before I die. It is still earmarked for a fall 08 release, sometime around Hallowe’en, and it will be kicked out into this world via a live "show" at my home, which ideally will run a few nights to a rotating crowd of about 20 each. For me, this home performance might just represent the new reality of music, income, and exposure…at least for someone in my shoes…married, father, self-employed. The traditional live performance route, while fun and social, represents a huge investment in time away from the family. So bringing the whole thing close to or in my home appeals to me on some level. As does making it a bit more of an event than the mid-week Indie feature project at Larry’s Pub. I hope that by event-icizing it, I can persuade a supportive group of friends, fans and family to come out and patronize my art in buying a CD and/or book, make a donation for the "event" they just took in, and basically support my efforts towards doing it again. More thoughts on this as we count it all down….. I have to say that while I’m a bit dismayed at how long it’s taking me to finish this project up (SOUNDTRACK), I’m also grateful for it, because some of the best ideas I’ve had about executing it have been as a result of letting the ideas form naturally over that long period.
Of course, what sort of a musician would I be if I wasn’t writing….and to that end I’ve been still occasionally archiving demo material for potential future albums and projects…and I’m excited about where some of this stuff is leading to. Like anyone who enjoys crafting stuff, I’ve broadened my arsenal of noise-making stuff as well….invested in the operation significantly, and I’m looking forward to really tearing into these tools to see what I can do with them. More on that soon as well.
But mostly I’ve been just learning… Mixing, listening, learning, refining. And I guess that’s the value in working on other people’s music. Gaining knowledge through being forced or forcing one’s self to try new things, employ tools in different ways, or even simply rethinking your vision in light of someone else’s.
Glad to be back online here. My pagerank has almost expired, and so I’d better get posting.
