soundtrack day 4
Well a client no-show this morning for meeting gave me a little extra time, so I have started song 2. This one is probably going to be one of my bigger challenges I think. The demo track I recorded about 2 years ago, maybe longer. Subsequent equipment failures and general disorganization on my part means that I’m only left with a stereo mix of the track. Unfortunately, the drums were played by hand by me, trying to keep up with a string part, and then the guitars are played to that terribly loose drum part. It’s not bad, and it has a lot of character which I’ve grown to love, but the tempo wavering and the overall sound quality is enough to make cringe. The big challenge is two-fold: capture the original energy and character of the demo, and find the same samples I used for strings….or better ones. To my ear they sound like Mellotron samples…but I can’t be sure….. so I’m going to have to start auditioning different plugins and sample libraries to find something that will work.
Funny, I had a brief moment when I got everything setup this morning, after I realized I had no source project to look at and no original sounds to work from, where I considered just touching up the mix I had and letting it stay. WEAK! I’m over that now…and I’m just going to plow through it. This is the trouble of having things in demo/album form for 2 years, you get used to what has been done, despite being able to do it better!
