soundtrack - day 3
I’ve spent this morning adding the outro electric guitar parts and finding the right amp/settings for them. Think I’ve got it…nothing layering 5 guitars from some lush strumming. I’m using a combination of my Traynor YCV50, my Epiphone Dot, using a Shure SM62 microphone on it, through my ART tube pre, and then into Guitar Rig3 for a little character polishing. I find Guitar Rig sounds best when I start with my amp as the signal source, instead of direct into the DAW.
Decided not to extend the song, I like it this short. Somehow, the old adage of “keep ‘em wanting more” seems to apply. It’s a nice piece of music, very comfortable to listen to, and I think it’s just enough to hook the listener in so they want to hear how it all ends up.
So now I’m going to see about adding some theremin to the middle part in place of a guitar solo, because if I bust out a solo, it’s going to sound like a big fat Floyd rip-off which I don’t want. After that, I think I’ll try some wacky choral work if the voice is up to it.
Well, added some wacky voices, but they aren’t doing it for me….I’ll keep playing with the idea, but sometimes you have to mindful of adding stuff for no reason. The theremin worked out better than planned..it sounds amazing! The only problem is, still this probable Floyd comparison, because it totally sounds that. Good thing the song is only 2 minutes long! Going to think about how else I can dress it up…. I’m not overly concerned..its only a niggling thought. Nothing else on the album is like it really. And I’m probably paranoid…who isn’t when trying to work out a concept album!
Dialed in a fantastic reverb patch for the drums and acoustic using the UAD Plate 140…very nice and live sounding. I think this tune is now 95% there.
I’ve decided to forego the “whoosh” for now, in favour of cutting the demo into the new track where it all kicks in. A crossfade thing. I’ve been doing it while mixing and it really sets up the main groove really well.
A great week’s work for sure! I’ll have this done by early next week, and then it’s on to track 2 and 3, both of which do not require much…maybe just re-mixing.
