SOUNDTRACK - DAY 2
The acoustic guitar tracking has gone rather well. The performances are not bad, but the mic placement and sound is fantastic, which really is the tricky part. I’ve found a sweet spot with my old MCA SP2 large diaphragm condenser microphone that’s giving me really nice body and lush strumming sounds. I haven’t used this mic much in the last couple of years in favour of a few newer condensers I’ve bought, so I’d forgotten how nice this cheap little mic can sound when you spend the time to set it up. I think the mic is being hit a bit hard though, I might have to back it up a wee bit, as I’m picking up some distortion here and there. But before I do that, I’m going to work the main drums a bit more to liven things up. The framework is all in place, now its time to get into some production.
I’ve got a bass-y synth coming from Carbon2 in Reaktor that sounds fantastic, but it’s out of sync with the project. Back when I recorded this, I didn’t even hear this problem…there is an LFO as well as a delay, both are out of time. Over the last 2 years it’s really begun to grate on me, so I guess I’m going to fix that. We’ll see how that goes, because in some spots the off-kilter nature of the part really works….maybe I’ll incorporate both.
I’ve already spent some time tightening up the Trilogy performance a bit…another thing that slowly got under my skin since finishing the original version of this song.

Alright, session is done for today. Didn’t get to the Carbon2 patch adjustment, but I did establish the processing chain for the acoustic guitars, as well as the drums all split out to separate channels, which sound good for now, if a little bit too nice. Might have to dirty them up a bit. Threw a little electric guitar thinking in there to see how it would work, and I’ll let that stew for a few days. Tightened up the bass performance as planned, also used the UAD Fairchild to smooth it out/punch it up.
Tonight/tomorrow will see some more time spent on the drums for sound and performance. I also need to find some kind of a whoosh to crescendo into the main groove. Going to work out how to overall thin out/lofi the intro to the piece pre-whoosh, as I want to the whoosh to peak at a full sounding mix on the beat. When all that is finished, I think I’ll start the window dressing… perhaps a bit of lead work on the guitar, or some cool synth stuff….haven’t decided about vocals, and one thing that’s niggling at me is whether or not I should extend the piece of music, as it’s kind of short. It is only the intro piece, but it’s quite nice and might stand to be fleshed out a bit more. Perhaps I’ll reprise it at the end, you know, classic concept album style. Not sure….
