SOUNDTRACK - DAY 1
More for me than anything, I’ve decided to blog about the recording process for this album’s final phase, so I have a record of it years down the road as I remember what might be my only finished project. :) I say that with a bit of sarcasm, as I sure hope it isn’t, but IT’S TAKING A LONG TIME.
Today, after doing some setup work on my new Stratocaster, I decided to setup the new project in Cubase and get to work. Beginning with Track 1 seemed like a logical choice for a few reasons, but mostly because it’s finished and I just have to redo the parts. So it all began with me trying to locate the old project, which proved to me no small task due to my ridiculous ever-changing naming conventions. Once I found it, I fired it up to grab things like project tempo, and generally see how I had made all that noise to begin with. With this, I fired up my new project, set it up in 24/44.1 (whereas the old one was for some reason at 24/48, which makes my DAW chug a little and some effects don’t work at 48), imported the old drum loop I had created, and set about re-programming it using better samples. All I had was the audio of this original loop, so it took a few minutes to get things to jive with the original feel, which I rather liked.
That done, I found all the old sound fx samples and imported them, and was delighted to find I had already comp’ d them together into a stereo track, which I was able to lay right in on a track as-is. Nice.
I’ve got some string parts from Reason which I’m going to keep for now, as they’re well played, but I think I also have the midi performance, so I’m going to see about finding better samples for the performance. But that’s it for today, a good solid push into the song has been made with the foundation ready for my acoustic guitar playing, which will begin tonight. New strings have been well broken in at the Gert weekend, so I’m ready to go. Not sure if I’ll record the acoustic in stereo or double the track, or both and see how they all sit. Stereo acoustic guitar is great sounding, but it takes up quite a bit of sonic space in the stereo image, and I’m not sure it needs to in this piece. We’ll see.
