Online Songwriting Collaboration - How Does It Work?
One of my favourite musical projects is the band Gert. 6 of us regularly get together on the interweb, to plan out and ultimately record music we write together. The process we employ to actually get things done might be of interest to those of you who write music, and defintely to those of you who do so with people who aren’t close by. Gert is spread out all over Canada, and one member in Boston. With a bit of discipline and employing tools readily available to almost anyone who spends time online, collaboration across great distances is easy, and the results can be impressive.
I want to direct your attention to this article written by Des McKinney, guru of all things audio, and the man behind www.hometracked.com, (a great resource for any recording enthusiast/songwriter). Des has pulled apart one of our songs from inception to finished product, describing in detail the process and tools we used to create, track and finally mix the song. Des has included audio clips of the song as it develops and the discussions we had along the way that shaped the directions we took. At the end, the end result of all that you’ve read. Anyone with an interest in songwriting will find this an interesting article.
