Digital SLR Joy (the obligatory moon shot)

As I’ve been trying to shoot imagery for SOUNDTRACK, it has become fairly clear to me that my trusty point-and-shoot Canon A630 would not do the job as well as I’d like.  My main concern is blowing the pictures up for print purposes, and not having that graininess that seems to be part of all but my very best (or lucky) shots.

Enter my new (used) Canon Rebel XT.   I’m amazed at the difference in quality of the pictures, even the crappy ones.  It’s kind of like if you knew you wanted to be a competitive swimmer, because you seemed to do alright with what you thought competitive swimming was all about…in your turtle pool.   Then one day you get to go to the Olympic pool.  So you go from feeling pretty confident in your little plastic pool, to totally inadequate and lost in this big oceanic body of water…

However, the camera is so good, that even my first few lengths felt great and my times are steadily improving.

Alright, enough analogizing….  This camera rocks.  Plain and simple.  What I’m blown away most with is depth of field.  But the richness of colour, the sharpness of the subjects, the variety of lenses available to artsify one’s photo-vision, and the games we can play in post-processing all add up to pure funnery.

So soon I will begin shooting in earnest for SOUNDTRACK, but because of the fast-approaching winter I may have to wait until next summer/fall to wrap it all up.  That and a few other niggling details involving video shooting and editing mean a likely release date of next fall.  I just think a near Hallowe’en release would be perfect for this (hopefully) edgy little project of mine.

All that said, here’s the obligatory moonshot, taken tonight in my backyard.   For any who are interested in this kind of thing, I found a great “how-to” regarding moon photography here.

I've never had this many boxes to fill with stuff before.... I'm going to keep extra juice here.

Squeeze Box

My Grandfather gave me one, so that goes in here, 'k?
