Album Notes/Skinny Puppy

Awesome!  I was cruising the net a month or so ago, and happened across a website of a very stylized illustrator.  I instantly fell in love with the esthetic of his work, and immediately saw the link between it and the music I’m working on for the album.  It’s surreal, suggestively dark, but overtly so, and highly stylized.  I was struck by how instantly I felt connected to his work, and how quickly the various images seem to underpin some of the themes I’m exploring for the album.

I’m happy to say that his response to my request to use his art as the visual stuff of my album was, “yes!”.  On top of that, he’s suggested that after sending him some of my tracks, inspiration might strike and new, informed-by-the-music art might transpire as a result.  How fantastic is that?

I want to to tell you who he is…but I don’t want to water down the impact of the final project…so I’m going to wait.  Soon….

But it brings me to Skinny Puppy’s most recent album, scant months old, entitled Mythmaker.

I’m not a SP fan…I have zero connection with anything previously released…but I bought this CD yesterday because the album art, and the title intrigued me.  In reading the liner notes, turns out the artwork is all courtesy of painter who’se work is part of someone’s private collection.   Very cool indeed.   I’m not the only one who finds their own visual art skills in short supply, but rather than commission something, finds inspiration in work already out there.   To the artists who agree to this kind of use for your work, a hearty slap on the back!

As for the music from Skinny Puppy…some great moments on there.  And a lot of funny stuff that I just don’t get, but I’m happy to listen to.  Production, however, is superb.  Worth the price of admission.   There are some sonic trains o’ thought that are quite similar to places I’m trying to create with my own album….so it was worth it from a research perspective for sure.
